Using Audacity to record and edit your own voice

Learn how to create and edit your own samples using Audacity.

1. Open Audacity
2. Select File ---> New
3. Open the audio panel from the preferences (sometimes found in settings menu).  Ensure the recording and output devices are set appropriately.  If using the built in microphone it should look like this:

  • If not using the built in options use the drop down menus to select the appropriate device.
  • If a novice user, it's best to leave the rest of the settings as they set up in Audacity as standard.  But if you want to tweak things there are lots of things you can explore here.

4. Click the red record button Controls Panel
5. You will see an audio track being created in real time. Now speak, sing or just make a noise and look to see if you are getting a good response from your mic.
